actually slight correction. whether jpg gives a smaller file size seems to depend on the size (and probably specifics) of the image i’m exporting
i tried to check on a 4960x3508 drawing i did, at the original size lossless webp wins over jpg lol
in fact lossy webp at max quality settings gives a smaller file size at the original size than the 50% scale jpg, somehow
if you’re wondering about jxl
ironically to the name, in this little experiment the only place it wins over other formats is at 50% scale lossless, and not by a lot to webp. it also opens slower for me, but i’m not sure whether this is because of the format or the image viewer
at the original image size and lossless compression it loses to webp (also lossless), but not png with lossy compression at max quality settings it loses to equivalent webp, and at the 50% size it loses even to jpg
i was wrong i cannot read 💔 lossless it does win over lossless webp actually, both at the original and downscaled size, at the cost of opening slower
lossy (at max settings) however it somehow loses to itself????
update also as a separate post because i know edits federate funkily: i cannot read apparently
jxl does reach smaller sizes than webp when both are lossless, assuming the file sizes displayed in dolphin are correct
but lossy at max settings it somehow loses to lossless jxl lmao
