the fact that inserting the wrong disc into the wrong drive, can just permanently brick your drive is why i'll only ever use DVDs or pirated mp4 files

where are all the smug "i buy everything physical so i can actually own it' ppl at with this one? xS whats the problem? companies can still revoke your phyiscal shit easily at any time and piracy is the only real way to ensure access to something long-term?

tbh even DVDs have some bullshit, but its well-understood bullshit; and i know what to expect from it, dvd drm getting in your way is mostly just skill issue; AACS is not

fyi AACSv2 in UHD-Bluray makes use SGX features in intel cpus which are sealed off execution w instructions encrypted and impossible to debug or inspect any of it (why is this even a feature .. wtf)

@hsza ngl this 'feature' feels like it would be really useful for malware (in the typical sense-) i mean the ccc talk goes over how they tried to prevent that, (also this 'feature' isn't in more recent cpus either iirc-)

@Li i doubt theres no ultraproprietary locked down firmalware running on the current intel chips thats meant to enable more of that sort of thing

@hsza actually, iirc; there isn't really a official way to play UHD-BluRay on PC at all these days- i think youu have to have an old processor or whatever; (idk if cyberlinks thingy is still updated-)

and if you want to get decrypt keys well you have to use CPU vulnerabilities :)

@hsza wait, wtf HDCP is handled by the IME ??? bruh

(why is the CPU even handling HDMI at all, let alone at .. what?)

.. honestly i think its funny that their trying so hard with HDCP given how broken it is in practice;

anyway my point about game drm vs movie drm definitely applies here too xS

@illyBytes @hsza atleast the videogame world they often remove the hefty shitty drm scheme after it gets inevitably cracked anyway :c

movie industry is so much more scummy and its mostly invisible ..
