Honestly, the best "should I date this person" heuristic for people under 50 is "do you remember using the same version of Windows in your childhood"

If you don't rermember using Windows 3.11 or at least Windows 95 or 98, you are probably too young for me. Alternatively, if you remember using Windows 1.0, you're probably way too old for me, and also, why were you using Windows 1.0.

@Elizafox bad choice of heuristic, ask any autistic tech person about windows 95 and they might know what compile flags they used for watson in the like one of the chigaco beta builds

i used to play with windows 98 se running off freedos running off a
dying okaidi 256MB flash usb drive thats like metal but like enclosed in this really sticky blue rubber that i used to carved into words using a compass (drawing tool)

@illyBytes My first version of Windows was 3.1 incidentally, although I guess technically some Windows 2.0 machines were around in schools I used, but they were already very old by this point.

My first computer at home ran Windows 3.11 actually. It was given to me by a teacher.

@illyBytes Yeah, I'm an antique. :P

Schools didn't even
have Internet when I was a kid. When the library got Internet it was a huge deal.

I remember when people started getting Internet, and also cellphones. But then again I remember pagers.

And I lived in a fairly urban area. In the US that mattered a great deal, because rural areas didn't get these things until years later.

@Elizafox being poor in the 2000s/2010s really is living in the 80s/90s, i also grew up without the web until like i think 2013/14ish? thats when grandpa install our STILL USED adsl2 lines and got his note 3, and we got like badly made chinese android tablets imported from the emirates by my aunt lol

before that, only had my aunt's offline laptop, and a preloaded ipod touch gen 2/3 (the one with no cameras)?

@freya @illyBytes Windows 98 was... brand new when I was 8. I remember when XP came out and it was like "holy crap." Although a lot of people thought it looked like "Fisher-Price crap." In fairness... it kinda did.

@Elizafox @freya @illyBytes I just turned 49 a few months ago so I'm loving all this "I'm old enough to remember Windows 3.x/95/98" nostalgia 🫠

We were poor growing up, and my first computer was a used TI-99/4A in 1983 when I was six. I learned BASIC on it, and it was great fun until my brother spilled his Sea Monkey aquarium on it by accident. I didn't get another computer of my own until I was 13, I bought my neighbor's TRS-80 CoCo2 for $50. It also died from a power surge but not before I beat Dungeons of Daggorath. A year later my then-estranged father sent me an Apple //c and it became, and still is, my favorite computer I've ever owned.

@illyBytes @freya Fun fact: I had hand-me-down computers, my first Linux install was from a Kubuntu CD I got for free in the mail because my CD burner didn't work, and I never looked back.

@illyBytes @Elizafox mine was Ubuntu 10.04, and installing it would always cause sound to break, so I had to boot off the cd, and then mount /usr off the hard drive and /home
