well, had to install 0.9.0-1ubuntu0.1 rather than the version mentioned in the post, but it worked
anyways, my point in testing elementary isn't necessarily for testing elementary (while elementary itself is banning slop from its code, the fact is that the distro is based on ubuntu, and well,,,), but rather pantheon desktop environment (mostly because, i currently use kde, and, ugh,,,)

hm, supposedly fractional scaling is supposed to work in so-called "secure session"
,,, but the only setting i can select on a vm is 100%, which is odd
i wonder if it's due to not having gpu drivers?
i kind of like pantheon desktop environment, except of course the problem is that i would either need to use elementary os (which is based on ubuntu, which,,, ugh) or arch linux (i really wish arch linux had a policy banning llms) or gentoo (which, i guess is an option, but,,, i don't feel like recompiling stuff all the time - and elementary is not a part of gentoo repos proper, but rather is an overlay)
or maybe there is some other distro that has pantheon, repology is down right now

okay, so repology's domain was stolen by its registrar, and changing /etc/hosts lets me access it
it seems that guix also has pantheon, albeit with an old version that doesn't have fractional scaling
