we have acquired a lenovo thinkpad T480S (we wanted the non-S but this was all we could find in stock locally)

now to see if we can put together a nixified libreboot

this is the model that's currently fanciest / most-modern but still well-supported by libreboot.

the boot process does require blobs.

it takes DDR4 RAM, which is frustrating as we have DDR5 we'd like to reuse, but oh well. desire is the origin of suffering. DDR5 isn't well-supported by free bootload stuff anyway, we're told.

the plan is to then partition it with a netbsd root, a separate home, and then a separate blank partition where the nix-netbsd partition will go when research has advanced that far

we wouldn't really have chosen to buy a laptop at this juncture, all else being equal, but the replacement battery in our framework 13 has been even more spicy-pillow than the one we replaced it with earlier this year, soooooooo we're prepared to call their alleged repairability not all it's cracked up to be :/

@ireneista is it just me or is the framework laptop not all the much repairable than your average corporate-acquired elitebook, with some gimic features, and at a much higher price?

@freya ultimately we see no point in placing our hopes in a for-profit corporation

@ireneista agreed. I'm still so pissed that RISC-V is the thing everyone's falling over themselves to promote. for fuck sake...

@freya @ireneista why? to me (someone who knows nothing about this) I like RISC-V bc of its open nature

@solonovamax @ireneista the platform story is ..... boring, anooooother fucking open-in-theory-but-not-really architecture that seems to attract the "legacy bad! kill! kill! kiiiiill!" linux people. I see RISC-V in the same bucket as Uutils

@freya @ireneista if you had to make an ideal arch to be the future, what would it be?

@solonovamax @ireneista SPARCv10. drop register windows, they're a lot of a mess and compilers are better about handling architectures without them. keep..... pretty much everything else. it's documented, it's battle tested to fuck, there are even, prebuilt, server-class SPARCv9 chips you can use as a foundation. SPARCv10 running OBP and Illumos, because they are absolutely trustable. slower? absolutely. more trustable, less of a slop factory than modern Linux? YES

@freya @ireneista I mean if you had to make a new arch, not just an existing one

@freya @ireneista idk, for fun
I wanna see what fun ideas you'd put into a new arch you'd invent

@solonovamax @ireneista I wouldn't. that would burn porter time, maintainer time, fab time, brainspace on something that doesn't need to be (re)-invented. it already exists. it's called SPARC. or maybe POWER

@freya @ireneista @solonovamax since power is mentioned, how does openpower compare to risc v?
